House Rules — DM Tip

Rules. Role playing games have rules. Here’s the thing you need to know about the rules: they are more of a rough guideline than something set in stone. If there is a rule you don’t like, ignore it. If there is a rule you want to change, change it. House rules have existed as long as games have, and every group I have ever played with has had some.

The only thing you need to do is play the game that works best for you and for your players. Remember, the entire point of all of this is to have fun. If a rule is standing in the way of that, it should be cast aside.

One note, if you do change the rules, make sure to let those playing at your table know. It isn’t any fun to have surprises like that during the game.

I play most of my games very rules-light. For me, the story that I am creating with the players is what is fun for me. Finding the right mix for you will take time, and the right mix might very well be playing the game exactly as written. Remember that there is no wrong way to play the game.

Experimentation is key. You may change a rule and decide you don’t care for the new way of doing things. You can change the rule again, or go back to how it was before. Keep working at it and you will find the right mix in time. Like everything worth doing, it will take practice.

So, open that Dungeon Master’s Guide and start rewriting it all to your taste.
