Sunken City

Date Played: 1/19/2007
Description: Sunken City is a viscous strategy for 2-4 players by one of the Barrister's favorite game design teams, Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kielsing, translated and imported from Germany by the good folks at Uberplay. Raise up roads and buildings from a city submerged beneath the waves, searching for lost treasure. But Neptune is roaming as well, sending those same roads and cities back to the watery depths. Return to your village with your treasure before Neptune send you there emptyhanded to start anew.

From Uberplay's website:

Hundreds of years ago, a wealthy city was struck by a gigantic tidal wave. While the wave destroyed everything in its path, the city sank beneath the waters nearly intact. It now rests at the bottom of a deep lake; its treasures guarded by Neptune.

Use your magical powers to raise portions of the city from the deep waters. Search for treasure and keep what you can - but beware Neptune's wrath, as he stalks and tries to overtake you. Gather all the treasure you can from the Sunken City!

Reviews for Sunken City :

Subject: Sunken City
Review: Two or three months ago, or maybe four, after a bunch of us were looking around at the various store shelves for a game to play, a small boxed game was picked. This game was called Monkey Arena, and we all weren't too sure how it would turn out. Frankly, it looked like a dud. I mean, fighting primates? How fun could that be?

Cut to two hours later, when our game - our FIRST game of this - actually finished. It was one of the most memorable times I've had playing any game, and I've played many games since I started going to the Barrister. Monkey Arena was a nice gem, a hidden treasure that had been overlooked for a long time, and now it's a game that many of us at the store enjoy playing and don't mind the hour or more it takes to actually finish.

Now, I hear you out there, asking the obvious question - "I thought this was a review of Sunken City. What the hell is Dave talking about Monkey Arena for?" And that's a perfectly valid question. The thing is, Sunken City is another one of those games that's been sitting on a shelf for a long time, that no one has played, and just about a week ago, we played it for the first time in the store.

And it was just like that night playing Monkey Arena. At first, the rules a little weird, but once the game got going, they made more sense. And by the end of the game, with all three of us trying to get our various treasures back to our village without suffering the wrath of Neptune, it was an engaging event. (author's note - an engaging event that I basically handed off to Gordon to win, I should add, by making the absolutely wrong move with Neptune. But I'm looking forward to a rematch someday. Anyway, review.)

Granted, Sunken City is not as long of a game as Monkey Arena - it has a built-in timer system, so the game will definitely end in less than an hour, once you know what you're doing, but it was a memorable game, with a perfect mix of strategy and that oh-so-valuable quality of backstabbing that you need to see in a game every once in a while.

So, give Sunken City a try, and next time you're at your game store, or a friend's house, or wherever you do your gaming, consider that game you've been ignoring or just weren't quite sure of, because it might be a flop, but it might turn out that you'll end the game looking forward to the next time you'll get to play.
