Commander Spotlight: Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons
Hello folks! My name is Jordan, your friendly neighborhood Barrister from the Mayfair Mall location. This is my first post here on the Barrister Blog, so please let me know what you think of the content. If you disagree with me, and feel the need to show me the error of my ways, feel free to stop down at the Mayfair location on Friday nights when we play MtG. (Shameless plug for the store achieved. Hopefully the reader didn’t notice. Wait, I didn’t mean to type this. Or did I?)
Okay, let’s get to it. Amonkhet previews are well under way, and we’ve already been given some powerful new toys to play with. We’ve gotten a new Gideon, as well as a new Liliana, but at this point, isn’t the constant Planeswalker barrage a bit tiring? I prefer to find the other gems that come out of a set, and Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons jumped off the page at me when I saw it previewed earlier this week.
The synergies are abundant with this one, and this is a card that would slot well into a few already established commander decks. The most obvious choice to me is Atraxa, as the proliferate triggers Atraxa produces could steadily wither away your opponents’ creatures; but I think Hapatra makes a great case as a commander of her own 99. The -1/-1 counter theme is prevalent in Amonkhet, so it’s safe to assume that we will be getting a few more tools as the rest of the set is previewed. Here is a short list of cards that synergize well with Hapatra, and would recommend putting into the 99 if you choose to start building around her:
Nest of Scarabs (New from Amonkhet)
Harbinger of Night
Melira, Sylvok Outcast
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Black Sun’s Zenith
Any great cards I missed that you would include? Feel free to stop down to Mayfair on a Friday night and let me know!
